Defence Construction Canada, CFB Petawawa
NOTRA conducted a Level 3 UXO clearance along a strip of shoreline adjacent to CFB Petawawa. The objective of the clearance operation was to identify, characterize and remove all metallic items >5cm², to a maximum depth of 1.5 metres. NOTRA combined the use of hand held detectors with EM61 survey techniques to complete the project on schedule, under budget and to the requisite standard of quality required by the DND and DCC. Specifically, NOTRA was responsible for:
- Establishing a good working relationship with the Defence Construction Canada representative;
- Developing a Work Plan (including QA/QC and Health & Safety);
- Identifying the boundary of the area(s) surveyed and/or cleared;
- Obtaining the required licenses for handling, transporting and storing explosives and explosives accessories;
- Following any Environmental Assessment (EA) restrictions identified for the project;
- Performing Geophysical surveys and conducting Level 1, 2 and 3 clearance operations;
- Handling materials of various hazard levels as per required industry standard and regulations;
- Restoring sites where material was removed;
- Participating in stakeholder meetings and public communications as required;
- Ensuring that Public access was denied to survey and/or clearance operations;
- Producing progress reports and quality control reports; and
- Producing a final report which included: a description of scope of work; drawing of the area surveyed; the project schedule; work conditions (outlining weather, soil type, etc.); number and description of UXO munitions scrap and Non-Munitions scrap located; pictures of each type of DUD, munitions scrap and Non-munitions scrap located at the site; and a summarized discussion of the tasks and recommendations to improve future tasks.
